A Good Guide On Social Media Risks

by Mike on April 13, 2010 0 Comments

This morning while browsing my security newsletters I ran across a link to a very good guide on how to avoid some of the risks involved with Social Media sites. The most popular of course is facebook. These are guidelines on what to watch out for and should be taken into account especially if you have children or teenagers with Facebook profiles.

Social Media Risks: The Basics

Check An App BEFORE You Install It

by Mike on April 7, 2010 0 Comments

This is a good idea for a website, why not check an application before you install it to check its security and privacy rating? I think if more people did this, they might get a better idea how vulnerable they make themselves when installing these on facebook. There are more than facebook apps of course, and I'm sure as time goes on the list for these apps will grow.

Nice Bank To Do Business With

by Mike on April 6, 2010 0 Comments

Pogowasright ran a story this morning about a class action lawsuit brought against Countrywide Financial alleging that client data was stolen and sold by employees, putting at risk tens of thousands and possibly millions of people's financial information. Countrywide was subsequently bought by Bank Of America.

Nice, gives you that nice warm fuzzy feeling doing business with large institutions like this doesn't it?

Reversal In Responsibility Retailers Play in Data Theft

by Mike on April 2, 2010 0 Comments

For a long time the burden of chasing after credit card theft or fraud has been placed on the shoulders of the issuing bank. That may soon change as more states are passing legislation that requires retail establishments to become PCI compliant and make sure that their systems will prevent such activity from occurring. Frankly it's about time. Why should financial institutions foot the bill for bad practice by a retailer that they have no control over? For smaller institutions this can add up to hefty losses over time. Lets hope more states adopt this practice and do it soon.

New Law Lets Banks Recover Data Breach Costs

JC Penney tried to block publication of data breach

by Mike on March 31, 2010 0 Comments

An interesting side note in the Heartland Payments System data breach where millions of credit cards were exposed and Albert gonzalez was sentenced to 20 years for masterminding the ring of hackers is that retailer JC Penney attempted to block the fact that they were one of the retailers that were included in the list.

The U.S. Secret Service had told JC Penney that its computer system had been broken into. The retailer's system had "unquestionably failed," but the government said the Secret Service did not have evidence that payment card numbers were stolen, U.S. prosecutors wrote.

Other retailers affected by the breach included TJX, 7-Eleven, Hannaford Brothers, Dave & Busters, BJ's Wholesale Club, OfficeMax, Boston Market, Barnes & Noble, Sports Authority, Forever 21 and DSW.

More On Poison Searches

by Mike on March 16, 2010 0 Comments

I just got done reading another post that indicated that hackers are exploiting the NCAA March Madness theme. Another is the Erin Andrews video that is being exploited. It definetly points to a pattern of where people are most likely to encounter "fake" Antivirus/Malware programs. That would be these particular searches that people are doing and clicking on malicious websites from the search engine.

Please take a look at the previous post and install the Site Advisor program from McAfee. It will help deter the possibility of an encounter with one of these rogue applications.

Also, if you want to really protect your online banking and shopping transactions I  HIGHLY recommend the SafeCentral 2.6 web browser. Even if you are unsure that your Antivirus and Malware programs are up to date, this browser will lock out the potential that a rogue piece of software can actually see what ...

Zonealarm Releases Data Encryption Software

by Mike on March 6, 2010 0 Comments

Zonealarm just released a very inexpensive total encryption software. This tool is becoming a necesstiy If you think of all the data we store now on our computers its definetly a consideration. What would you do if someone stole your laptop, or even broke into your house and stole your desktop computer. If its encrypted, you don't have to worry about someone stealing that sensitive data.

This software is good in the sense that it encrypts alll the data on your computer, including your operating system. From the website:

Automatically encrypts all hard drive contents, including the operating system, system files and temporary and erased files. All logical partitions are boot-protected and encrypted, sector-by-sector. As a result, attempts to copy individual files, or introduce rogue programs for brute force attacks, are made impossible - even if the hard drive is physically transferred to another computer.

Add pre-boot authentication and a ...

Very interesting post I thought. Worth reading for some people who own Apple's and are always crowing about how they don't worry about vulnerabilities. Well, you would be surprised maybe to know that the Safari browser figures to be the most easily hacked browser available. Again, it's not always the operating system that gets slammed people. There are many software apps that need to be kept up to date. So, if you own an Apple and think you can't get punked, better think again.
