by Mike on March 31, 2010 0 Comments

There are lots of very useful things you can do with a bootable USB. One of the best uses is to create a Rescue CD that you can use on friend and families PC's or any other that you suspect may be infected and perhaps the PC won't boot. Nice utility..... *****

JC Penney tried to block publication of data breach

by Mike on March 31, 2010 0 Comments

An interesting side note in the Heartland Payments System data breach where millions of credit cards were exposed and Albert gonzalez was sentenced to 20 years for masterminding the ring of hackers is that retailer JC Penney attempted to block the fact that they were one of the retailers that were included in the list.

The U.S. Secret Service had told JC Penney that its computer system had been broken into. The retailer's system had "unquestionably failed," but the government said the Secret Service did not have evidence that payment card numbers were stolen, U.S. prosecutors wrote.

Other retailers affected by the breach included TJX, 7-Eleven, Hannaford Brothers, Dave & Busters, BJ's Wholesale Club, OfficeMax, Boston Market, Barnes & Noble, Sports Authority, Forever 21 and DSW.

AVG Releases Rescue CD

by Mike on March 27, 2010 0 Comments

The AVG Rescue CD is essentially a portable version of AVG Anti-Virus supplied through Linux distribution. It can be used in the form of a bootable CD or bootable USB flash drive to recover your computer when the system cannot be loaded normally, such as after an extensive or deep-rooted virus infection. In short, the AVG Rescue CD enables you to fully remove infections from an otherwise inoperable PC and render the system bootable again.

Once again, a great tool to have in case you have a problem with a virus or piece of malware. You can burn this onto a USB stick as well. *****

Stinger is a stand-alone utility used to detect and remove specific viruses. It is not a substitute for full anti-virus protection, but rather a tool to assist administrators and users when dealing with an infected system. Stinger utilizes next generation scan engine technology, including process scanning, digitally signed DAT files, and scan performance optimizations.

This version of Stinger Detects and removes the following "FakeAlert" Variants - KryptikAVP SecurityFakespypro,Winwebsec, Antivirus Soft and XPSpy.

Another useful tool to add to your arsenal in case you run across one of these programs on your computer or using it on a clients infected PC.

More On Poison Searches

by Mike on March 16, 2010 0 Comments

I just got done reading another post that indicated that hackers are exploiting the NCAA March Madness theme. Another is the Erin Andrews video that is being exploited. It definetly points to a pattern of where people are most likely to encounter "fake" Antivirus/Malware programs. That would be these particular searches that people are doing and clicking on malicious websites from the search engine.

Please take a look at the previous post and install the Site Advisor program from McAfee. It will help deter the possibility of an encounter with one of these rogue applications.

Also, if you want to really protect your online banking and shopping transactions I  HIGHLY recommend the SafeCentral 2.6 web browser. Even if you are unsure that your Antivirus and Malware programs are up to date, this browser will lock out the potential that a rogue piece of software can actually see what ...

Poison Searches Becoming Serious Problem

by Mike on March 15, 2010 0 Comments

Although this post on the issue is a little late, it's important that end-users become aware of the growing threat from poison search listings. Within the last week there have been over 6600 malicious site listings under the top 300 search topics on Google.

To prevent this, you really need to be running a Site Advisor program rather than just using Google's search engine. This will alert you to a vulnerability that may be present. Attackers are constantly changing their seacrh terms and are very good at getting to the top of the search engines for a particular search term.

My recommendation for this is McAfee's Site Advisor.

It does a good job, its free, and you need to use a tool like this. For more information you can read the post at Dark Reading

Defeating Man-in-the-Browser: How to Prevent the Latest Malware Attacks against Consumer & Corporate Banking

by Mike on March 11, 2010 0 Comments

Just got done reading a new report that is available on Bankinfosecurity.com that explains the whole "Man In The Middle" browser attack in specific detail. What is found is that there are not many traditional methods that do an effective job at blocking this malicious activity. Some institutions have implemented tokens, and taken great means to secure authentication and they all can be bypassed by the latest hacker techniques.

We at Datasavers believe that there is a tool that helps to thwart these latest attacks and can give you the peace of mind knowing while transacting your business on the internet knowing that your information is secured. Of course you need to make sure that your anti-virus and malware programs are up to date. Thats the first line of defense. Utilizing a tool like the SafeCentral browser is an excellent 2nd line of defense in protecting your transactions. You ...

Zonealarm Releases Data Encryption Software

by Mike on March 6, 2010 0 Comments

Zonealarm just released a very inexpensive total encryption software. This tool is becoming a necesstiy If you think of all the data we store now on our computers its definetly a consideration. What would you do if someone stole your laptop, or even broke into your house and stole your desktop computer. If its encrypted, you don't have to worry about someone stealing that sensitive data.

This software is good in the sense that it encrypts alll the data on your computer, including your operating system. From the website:

Automatically encrypts all hard drive contents, including the operating system, system files and temporary and erased files. All logical partitions are boot-protected and encrypted, sector-by-sector. As a result, attempts to copy individual files, or introduce rogue programs for brute force attacks, are made impossible - even if the hard drive is physically transferred to another computer.

Add pre-boot authentication and a ...

Waiting Patiently For This Tool

by Mike on March 4, 2010 0 Comments

Secunia has been very instrumental in helping consumers and businesses make sure that their third party software applications are up-to-date. Their online scanner is great at looking at the software you have residing on your PC and alerting you whether you should patch a particular app.

At the recent RSA conference in San Francisco, they have announced that they have in Beta an application that will be free for consumers to install and it will automatically patch applications that are behind or become insecure.
